First Aid is the temporary and immediate treatment given to a person, who is injured or suddenly becomes ill, using facilities or materials available at that time before regular medical help is imported.

Objective of First Aid:-

  • To preserve life
  • To prevent further injury and deterior condition.
  • To make the victim as comfortable as possible to conserve strength.
  • To put injured person under medical professional for care earlier.

4.Avoid handling the casualty unnecessarily.

5.Arrange for safe removal of the casualty to care by a doctor or hospital as soon as possible.

Approach:-

  • This should be quick but calm and controlled.
  • Do not place your self in danger when approaching the casualty.
  • Give your identification and if there are no doctors, nurses or other trained people calmly take charge.
  • Assessing the Situation:- Assess the situation and decide on the priorities of action.

Road Accident:-

  • Instruct by stander to control the traffic keeping it away from yourself and the casualty.
  • Watch out for fire risk especially from petrol spillage and switch of the ignition of the vehicles concerned.
  • Gas and Poisons fumes:- If possible out of the source.

First Aid Kit:-

  • ➤ All work places, leisure centers, & homes should have a first aid kit.
  • The list for the work place and leisure centers however must confirm to legal requirements and in some cases these kits may be tailored to suit what is required such as adding additional equipments for a specific use.
  • The first aid kit should be clearly marked and easily accessible for the trained first
  • aider. If you decided to assemble your own kit use a clean water proof container, mark it clearly and share it in a dry place.
  • Check your kit regularly and replace items as soon as possible after your kit has been used.

Basic First Aid:-

1. Respiration: If it is failing artificial respiration-Mouth to Mouth or Mouth to Nose.

  1. Bleeding: Arrest the bleeding and protect the wound. Apply direct or indirect pressure. Cover with a dressing, apply a pad and firm bandages.
  2. Fractures: Immobilise it with a well padded stiff support reaching the joints on either side. Apply bandages on either side of the site and at the joints on either side support.
  3. Burns and Scalds: A burn is caused by dry heat and scald by moist heat like steam, very hot water or oil. Immediately cool the area with cold water for 15 mins, till pain subsides. Do not break blisters, or apply anything on the burns. Cover with a sterile or clean cloth, pad and bandage give fluids.
  4. Nose Bleeding: Sit him up facing the breeze and the head slightly forward. Ask him to breath through the mouth and not to blow the nose. Apply a cold compress over the nose. The soft part of the nose may be pinched close with the fingers for 10 minutes. Cold application on the back of the neck and forehead may help.
  5. Bee Sting: Do not press the bag (of the sting). Use forceps and remove the sting. Apply cold or weak ammonia.
  6. Animal bites: Wash with soap and plenty of water. Loose bandage may be applied and get quick medical Aid.
  7. Fainting: Lay him down and loosen the clothing around chest and waist. Turn head to one side. The legs may be raised a little. Do not attempt to give any solids or liquids. On recovery a small quantity of a drink may be given and allowed to sit up and move after rest.
